Location
Koundi Village, Lom-et-Djérem Department, East Region, Cameroon

Project goal
The Forest Conservation Project in Koundi - Eastern Cameroon aims to protect and preserve above 100 hectares of critical forest ecosystems over 40 years.

Project description
The Koundi Forest Conservation Project is a large-scale nature-based solution project in Cameroon to conserve nature, protect and preserve forest ecosystems, and promote sustainable development.

The purpose of this project is to prevent further deforestation and forest degradation by providing local people with alternative means to support their lives such as opportunities for participation and cooperation in forest conservation and afforestation project activities. This project will create vital employment opportunities for the locals, improve their living quality, and conserve regional biodiversity.

The project aims to save emissions by avoiding the release of carbon associated with deforestation over 40 years. The reduction in deforestation will be achieved through a series of activities that are designed to significantly improve the livelihoods of locals, such as sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, beekeeping and fire management.

In addition, a significant share of the project’s carbon credit revenue will be invested in the construction of schools, to improve health and education in the project area, and in general activities that promote and guarantee project sustainability.

SDGs

Local communities impact
The project is designed to have a positive impact on local communities and the environment. The project offers job opportunities, community training, and new infrastructure, such as improved access to medical care, contributing to improving the local community's quality of life and sustainable development. All non-timber forest product (NTFP) yields such as honey and medicinal plants from project are also for the benefit of the local community.

Environmental impact
The project has an extraordinary impact on the environment. It promotes and conserves regional biodiversity, conserves forest lands, maintains vital habitats for local wildlife, and plays a critical role in carbon sequestration. The project contributes to protecting a healthy, thriving ecosystem, making a positive environmental impact.

The project's impact
The Koundi Forest Conservation Project is designed to positively impact local communities and the environment by creating jobs, improving living quality, and contributing to conserve regional biodiversity. The project focuses on conserving tropical rainforest on community-owned land from further degradation and contribute to biodiversity preservation and sustainable development.

In addition, the project also aims to promote education and outreach programs to increase awareness of the importance of forests and raise people's awareness of protecting nature.

In a summary this project intends to achieve 3 goals:

  1. Develop and manage the Koundi rainforest in the East Region of Cameroon.
  2. Combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
  3. Create jobs, improve living quality, and conserve regional biodiversity
